My brake isn't engaging properly anymore! What should I do?

If your brake is no longer engaging properly, there can be various reasons for this. It is important to identify and rectify the problem quickly to ensure your safety while riding.

Check the brake pads for wear

One possible reason for a poorly functioning brake is worn brake pads. Therefore, check the condition of the pads and replace them if necessary. Worn brake pads can cause the brake to no longer grip properly, thus impairing braking performance.

Check the lever reach of the brake lever

Another important aspect is the adjustment of the brake lever's reach. Make sure the brake lever is correctly adjusted to achieve optimal braking performance. Incorrectly adjusted lever reach can cause the brake to not engage properly.

Check the oil level in the sight glass on the brake lever

A low oil level in your brake system can also lead to poor braking performance. Therefore, regularly check the oil level in the sight glass on the brake lever and top up with brake fluid if necessary. A sufficient oil level is crucial for the brake to function properly.

Bleed the brake if necessary

If, despite the measures mentioned above, the brake still does not engage properly, there may be air in the brake system. In this case, it is advisable to bleed the brake to remove air bubbles and improve braking performance. It is best to use a commercially available bleeding kit for hydraulic bicycle brakes. These kits come with detailed instructions to make the bleeding process easier for you.

By following these steps and regularly checking the functionality of your brake, you can ensure that your brake always works optimally and that you are safe on the road.
