The display shows READY, but it won't start!?

If your WANDLER electric scooter display shows READY, but doesn't start when you press the throttle, it's not necessarily a motor or controller fault. Often, the vehicle still detects an active brake signal and therefore does not release the drive.

The most common cause is a misadjusted brake lever. In rarer cases, a defective brake lever can also be responsible. Before replacing components, the cause should be systematically narrowed down.

If READY is displayed but the scooter doesn't start, first check: Is there an error message? Do the indicators, lights, and display controls work? If everything else works, a misadjusted or defective brake lever is often the cause.

What does READY mean?

The READY display fundamentally means that the system is switched on and ready to drive. Nevertheless, the drive can remain blocked if the vehicle detects a continuous brake signal.

This is a protective function: As long as the controller detects that the brakes are being applied, the motor is not released. This can cause the scooter to remain stationary despite the READY display.

Step 1: Check if an error message is displayed

First, check if an Error Code is displayed on the screen in addition to the READY message. If an error code is present, this error should first be checked according to the corresponding instructions.

  • Is an error code displayed?
  • Does the display remain stably on?
  • Does the display show READY?
  • Does the display react normally to inputs?

If an error code is displayed, another fault may be present. If no error code appears, the check continues with the basic functions.

Step 2: Check if other functions are working

Next, check if the other electrical functions are working normally. This allows an assessment of whether the vehicle fundamentally has power and the display is communicating correctly.

  • Do the indicators work?
  • Do the lights work?
  • Can the display be operated?
  • Do buttons react as usual?
  • Does the display stay on?

If these functions work normally, the power supply is usually present. Then the next test step is the brake lever or the brake signal.

Important:
Only check the following points while stationary and not in public traffic. The only goal is to determine whether the drive is fundamentally released.

Step 3: Check left brake lever

First, disconnect the connecting cable on the brake lever on the left side. Then, carefully check if the scooter releases the drive again.

If the scooter then reacts again, the left brake lever is the cause. In this case, the brake lever is either misadjusted or defective.

Checking the left brake lever:
  1. Park the scooter securely.
  2. Disconnect the left connecting cable on the brake lever.
  3. Turn on the scooter.
  4. Carefully check if the drive is released.
  5. If yes: the left brake lever is the cause.

Step 4: Check right brake lever

If the scooter still doesn't start after disconnecting the left brake lever, reconnect the left brake lever and repeat the test on the right side.

To do this, disconnect the connecting cable on the right brake lever and carefully check again whether the scooter releases the drive.

Checking the right brake lever:
  1. Reconnect the left brake lever correctly.
  2. Disconnect the right connecting cable on the brake lever.
  3. Turn on the scooter.
  4. Carefully check if the drive is released.
  5. If yes: the right brake lever is the cause.

Step 5: Identify brake lever

If the scooter reacts again after disconnecting a specific brake lever, the affected brake lever has been identified. In many cases, this brake lever is not defective, but only the adjustment ring or the working position of the brake lever is out of adjustment.

The adjustment ring must be set so that the brake lever works correctly and the brake signal does not remain permanently active.

Step 6: Loosen grub screw on adjustment ring

To be able to move the adjustment ring, the grub screw under the adjustment ring must first be carefully loosened. Only then can the adjustment ring be adjusted in small steps.

Important:
Only loosen the grub screw carefully. Do not remove it completely if it is not necessary. Work in small steps and check the function after each change.

Step 7: Adjust adjustment ring correctly

Carefully move the adjustment ring back and forth to find the correct working position. The goal is for the brake lever to be recognized cleanly again and for the scooter to be able to start when READY is displayed.

  • Loosen grub screw slightly
  • Carefully move or turn the adjustment ring
  • Work in small steps
  • Check function after each change
  • If the scooter moves again, maintain position
  • Tighten grub screw again

Once the correct position is found and the scooter reacts correctly again, the grub screw must be tightened again.

When is the brake lever defective?

If the scooter only moves when the brake lever is disconnected, but the adjustment ring no longer allows a stable working position, the brake lever may be defective. Damaged cables, loose contacts, or a continuously incorrect signal can also indicate a defective brake lever.

In this case, the affected brake lever should be replaced.
